There’s a good reason why this Craftsman bungalow looks tiny. It is!
This house was built in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a tiny vaudeville couple in 1912. Jean Bregant was 42 inches tall and Inez Lewis Bregant was 39 inches tall.
The house was customized to fit their heights. That includes a 40-inch-high fireplace, which is about waist-high to a person of average stature, as well as smaller curio cabinet in the dining room, and a 36-inch claw foot bathtub.
The light switches and thermostat were placed at convenient heights.
In 2013, the Bregant House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a local landmark. See the full story here. A preservation group called Preserve Council Bluffs is raising money to restore the house. One of the most recent projects was restoring the front porch. That included shoring up the foundation and bricks, as well as restoring the original latticework in front.
A Go Fund Me campaign has been created to raise money for the restoration.
